Prof. Jean-Marc Sabaté is working as Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology, Avicenne University Hospital, Bobigny, France, and is Professor in Gastroenterology at the Sorbonne Paris Nord University. Since 2002, he pursues his research in the Intestinal Bowel Syndrome (IBS) field at the INSERM unit U-987 « Physiopathology and clinical pharmacology of pain » (Ambroise Paré Hospital, France). He is the co-founder and President of the association APSSII (Association of patients suffering from intestinal bowel syndrome).

Prof. Jean-Marc Sabaté is working as Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology, Avicenne University Hospital, Bobigny, France, and is Professor in Gastroenterology at Sorbonne Paris Nord University.

 

He graduated from medical school, Necker Enfants-Malades (Paris V Descartes University), and afterwards completed his internship in hepatology and gastroenterology in Ile-de-France region and his fellowship in Cochin Hospital (1996-1998, Paris V) and Saint Louis Hospital (1998-2000, Paris 7 Denis Diderot). He carried out his research at INSERM U-987 (“Pathophysiology and clinical pharmacology of pain”) with Doctor Didier Bouhassira and defended his PhD thesis entitled “Rectal visceral sensitivity in healthy subjects” in 2001. He was appointed Professor in Gastroenterology in 2010 at Paris 7 Denis Diderot University and since 2019 at Sorbonne Paris Nord University.

 

His main research areas are the pathophysiology and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, patients’ quality of life but also functional constipation and gastrointestinal oncology. He has published more than 75 original articles and also written book chapters on GI motility diseases and functional GI disorders, has supervised various PhD students. Prof. Sabaté has been the President of the French Group of Neurogastroenterology (Groupe Français de Neuro-Gastroentérologie) and is member of the scientific committee of the JFHOD (French national congress of gastroenterology, hepatology and gastrointestinal oncology). He is also member of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM). With one of his patients, he co-founded in 2010 the French organization of IBS patients (Association des Patients Souffrant du Syndrome de l’Intestin Irritable) and he is now the President of its Scientific Council.
