Prof. Koen Huysentruyt

MD, PhD, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Clinical Nutrition, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (Brussel, Belgium)

Graduated in Medicine at the University of Hasselt and the KU Leuven, Prof. Huysentruyt specialized in pediatrics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He followed his pediatrician career in the specialization of pediatric gastroenterology at the UZ Brussel, the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada.

In 2016, he defended his PhD "disease-related undernutrition in hospitalized children" and he also graduated as a biostatistician in 2021. He currently holds the position of Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel in Brussels Region, Belgium. His main clinical interests include pediatric general gastroenterology and nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatology.

Why you should listen

After completing his medical studies at University of Hasselt in 2006, Prof. Huysentruyt achieved his master’s degree in medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven. He started his medical career with a pediatric residency at the Brussels Free University and in the hospital of Genk (Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg). In 2016, he undertook his Ph.D. on the field of "Disease-related undernutrition in hospitalized children", in the Brussels Free University Hospital, where he remained until 2018.

 

In 2018, Prof. Huysentruyt starts a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology with subspecialty in the care of children with intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome and NPD at home at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada, where he stayed for 2 years.

 

Since 2020, he holds the position of Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel in Brussels and, in 2022, he founded the Brussels Center for Intestinal Rehabilitation in Children (B-CIRC) together with Dr. Vanderlinden and Dr. Vercauteren.

 

He has been active in the field of clinical nutritional research in pediatrics, which is reflected by many publications, presentations in national and international conferences and member of ESPGHAN committees and working groups. In addition, Prof. Huysentruyt is a member of the board of directors of the Association for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (VVKVM) and an expert of the Higher Health Council.

 

He also graduated as a biostatistician in 2021 and his scientific interests include nutrition and malnutrition in children, intestinal failure in children, pediatric inflammatory bowel disease and hepatology.
