Program

You will learn about the key scientific advances on children’s gut microbiota and GI health, presented at the 54th Annual ESPGHAN meeting.  In a dynamic roundtable discussion, the webinar is hosted by 4 renowned pediatric gastroenterologists who attended the congress and will present a summary of the main lectures presented during the meeting.

 

This interactive webinar is moderated by Prof. Koen Huysentruyt from Belgium with interventions from Prof. Alessio Fasano from the USA, Dr. Jorge Amil Dias from Portugal, and Prof. Iva Hojsak from Croatia.

 

Prof. Fasano summarizes the key sessions and abstracts presented during the congress about the role of gut microbiota on health and dysfunctional gut in early life. Dr. Amil Dias focuses on the updates on the gastrointestinal tract as a therapeutic target for diseases, providing an overview of the recent findings regarding the children’s’ gastrointestinal health and disorders.  And, Prof. Hojsak, shows the newest evidence for « Biotics » (probiotics, symbiotics) and their role in improving early life health.

About the speakers

Prof. Alessio Fasano

MD, PhD, W. Allan Walker Chair of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, MassGeneral Hospital for Children (Boston, USA)

Prof. Alessio Fasano is chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). As Director of the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center (MIBRC) at MGHfC, Prof. Fasano explores the host’s immune system and the role of dysbiosis on the onset and progression of celiac disease and other disorders in order to develop preventive strategies.

Prof. Iva Hojsak

MD, PhD, Referral Center for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Children’s Hospital Zagreb (Zagreb, Croatia)

Iva Hojsak is pediatric gastroenterologist, graduated at Medical School of Zagreb in Croatia, where she also undertook her PhD degree. She is a professor of pediatrics at University of Zagreb Medical School and University of J.J. Strossmayer Medical School.

 

As head of the Referral Center for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and a deputy director of the Children's Hospital Zagreb, Prof. Hojsak has published more than 200 scientific and clinical papers as well as she has participated in more than 15 international and National scientific projects in the intestinal disorders, parenteral nutrition, intestinal microbiota, and probiotics fields.

Dr. Jorge Amil Dias

MD, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hospital Lusíadas (Porto, Portugal)

Graduated in Medicine in 1977 at Medical School of Porto, Dr. Amil Dias is a pediatric gastroenterologist with more than 40 years of clinical experience. He occupied for almost 39 years the head of the Unit of pediatric gastroenterology at the São João hospital in Porto, Portugal.

He occupies different positions on working groups and committees of ESPGHAN (IBD, EGID’s, Endoscopy). His mainly areas of expertise include pediatric digestive diseases such as IBD, celiac disease, eosinophilic GI diseases and acute and chronic diarrhea.

Prof. Koen Huysentruyt

MD, PhD, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Clinical Nutrition, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (Brussel, Belgium)

Graduated in Medicine at the University of Hasselt and the KU Leuven, Prof. Huysentruyt specialized in pediatrics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He followed his pediatrician career in the specialization of pediatric gastroenterology at the UZ Brussel, the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada.

In 2016, he defended his PhD "disease-related undernutrition in hospitalized children" and he also graduated as a biostatistician in 2021. He currently holds the position of Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel in Brussels Region, Belgium. His main clinical interests include pediatric general gastroenterology and nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatology.
